Whittling Away the Wear

In 2004 we attended the Honda Hoot in Knoxville, TN, where I rode a Matte Uranium Honda 919. I decided that would be my next sport bike, having had too many issues with my previously beloved Ducati Monster.

Fast forward, actually not too fast or too forward. Brian brought me to Route 15 Honda, Bob Kurtzweil’s shop, under some pretense or, perhaps, just for a visit. While looking around the floor, he called me into the work area. Sitting pretty was a Matte Uranium, brand-spanking new 919, resplendent with a red ribbon. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped as Brian handed me the key.

When you get cold, your body automatically decreases the amount of blood circulating to your limbs and skin in order to decrease the rate of heat loss and protect the head and vital organs for the longest possible time. So when you’re riding through a damp 55° evening and your hands and feet feel frozen, it’s because your body is trying to protect you by shutting off some of the blood to your extremities. An electric vest will ‘fake out’ your body by keeping your trunk warm, then plenty of warm blood will be allowed to circulate to your fingers and toes, letting you ride in greater comfort and control. The difference is so dramatic that you may never take another trip without an electric vest.

Get High in New Jersey

High Point State Park is simply stunning during the daytime; you can see for miles all around, into New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Located along the Appalachian Trail, the base of High Point Monument rests 1,803 feet above sea level and the monument itself towers 220 feet above that. From the monument, you’ll enjoy the most amazing views but the scenery is even more spectacular as the sun sets. You can watch it dip below the horizon after a hike, or you can simply drive right up to a magnificent observation area. While nothing is as incredible as seeing the sights in person, this video by YouTube user Rick Knox does a fantastic job capturing the beauty.

Newly crowned MotoAmerica Stock 1000 champion Corey Alexander and Temecula, California-based Doffo Winery have collaborated for the second consecutive year to release a limited edition 2019 red wine blend. Only 100 bottles dubbed "Tinto Ventitre" have been produced and branded under Doffo's motorcycle inspired MotoDoffo collection of wines. Every bottle purchased will also include a signed print of the label artwork.

Slingshot to Space!

Late last month (September 2022), a plucky group of aerospace engineers and techs using an oversized centrifuge successfully tested their idea to throw a demo payload – including a NASA test package – high into the sky, at high speeds. The payload went up (and was later recovered) from the Jornada del Muerto desert in the U.S. state of New Mexico. SpinLaunch says its goal is to provide affordable and rapid cargo launches to space. And to that end the team has constructed an enormous centrifuge – inside a disk-shaped vacuum chamber – which the company says will eventually be able to fling an unpowered vehicle up into Earth-orbit.
