The Age of Uncertainty

I fell. I was playing in a rainy golf tournament, slipped on a wet bridge, and fell hard on my left hip and side, hard enough that others came running. It winded me and I spent a little while doing a “post crash checklist” as we say in the off-road motorcycle/bicycle world. It is a routine with which I have all too much experience. I lay there, methodically checking for serious damage and, finding none, stood up and finished the round. I wish I could blame my “high score” booby prize on the fall, but it was my lousy game.

Near the end of 2022, Cycle World road test editor Don Canet went to work turning laps and getting performance numbers for their 2022 superbike shootout. Something in those days of testing sparked a desire for a new motorcycle. See, Don doesn’t have the constant flow of test bikes he once enjoyed as a CW staffer, and he really felt the need to actually own a bike. The last bike he owned was in 1988—a brand-new Suzuki GSX-R750.

When he called and asked to test three street-focused adventure-tourers, Justin Dawes asked, “Tell me why?” He said he was shopping and figured it would be fun and informative to bring the CW readers along on his tire-kicking journey. They gathered a Triumph Tiger 660, Suzuki V-Strom 650, and Kawasaki Versys 650, and shipped them to Central California to sort out which is the best buy.

The World's True First Superbike

Oh, okay ... we might be biased - but the original Kawasaki Z-1 was special. Very special and is the stuff of which two-wheel legends are made. The secret project was called New York Steak - and when introduced it change the trajectory of motorcycles as we know them. The short film is incredibly well done and will put a smile on any old Z owner and have those that were not... well a bit of envy never hurt anyone did it

Freezing rain is simply rain that falls through a shallow layer of cold temperatures at or below 32 degrees F (0 degrees Celsius) near the surface. When this rain becomes super-cooled, it can freeze on contact with roads, bridges, trees, power lines and vehicles. When freezing rain accumulates, it can add a lot of weight on trees – a quarter of an inch of ice can add 500 pounds of weight – which can bring trees down and result in numerous power outages and damage to homes.
